Getting Started

What Typically Happens in the Consultation Session

You Are Invited to Speak Freely

You may be asked something simple, such as: “What brings you here now?” OR “What made you decide to come at this moment?”

There is no expectation that your story be linear, organized, or complete. Pauses, uncertainty, emotion, and even confusion are welcome. The analyst listens not only to content, but to tone, rhythm, emotion, and meaning.

 The Analyst Listens Differently

A psychoanalyst listens for: Repeating emotional themes; Conflicts between thoughts and feelings; How relationships are experienced; How suffering is managed, avoided, or contained

They may ask clarifying or gently probing questions—not to interrogate, but to open space for reflection.

Silence is not a failure; it is often meaningful.

 You May Feel Unexpected Things

It is common to feel: Relieved or unexpectedly emotional; Anxious, exposed, or unsure; Curious, soothed, irritated, or moved

These early feelings are important. Psychoanalysis takes them seriously as information about your inner world—not as something to correct or suppress.

Practical Matters Are Discussed

Usually toward the end (or in a separate conversation), the analyst will address: Frequency of sessions; Fees and insurance (if applicable); Format (in-person vs. remote

A consultation may be one session or a few, allowing both of you to decide whether to proceed

Insurance

I participate in out of network insurance only. Your health insurance carrier may cover your psychotherapy services in full or part. I would suggest that you check your coverage and ask the following:

  • Do you have mental health benefits? If so, do you have in-network or out-of network benefits?

  • If so, is there a deductible and has it been met by other medical services other than mental health?

  • How many sessions per year does your health insurance cover?

  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

  • Do you need approval from your primary physician?

Payment

Services are private‑pay. Insurance is not accepted directly; however, a monthly superbill can be provided upon request for out‑of‑network reimbursement.

Accepted payment methods:
